Joel Hendry Joel has been working as a timber framer since 1997 and a carpenter for longer, learning his trade "on the job", and gaining experience in green oak framing and restoration, as well as general carpentry, pole lathe turning, joinery and furniture making. He has worked with many experienced timber framers and some of the leading companies in the country, and started running his own jobs in 2001, establishing relationships with clients and working to very high and sometimes unusual specifications (such as the Giant Chair). His work has taken him to many places in England, and to many different styles of vernacular architecture, which he continues to be inspired by. Joel is passionate about wood and it's inherent qualities, and believes in it's value as a sustainable building material for the future. His interest in historic buildings and traditional carpentry techniques and tools has led to a deep understanding of how the great timber frames we now admire, were built. As a consequence, he has been involved in various conservation projects, and has run courses on historic building using the techniques, design methods and hand tools available to 13th century carpenters. He has also been team leader on communal building projects such as Wynstone’s School sports hall and Northmoor trust head office, organising volunteers and youngsters, to create roof trusses & buildings for their projects. Joel enjoys working with wood from tree to finished product and applies his exacting standards and understanding of design to every detail. Joel lives on Dartmoor with his wife, who is a teacher, and two children. He enjoys rock climbing and travelling to the wilder parts of the world. Direct Contact:joel@emanuelhendry.co.uk
